    Few industries have grown as much in the past couple of decades as web design. The Internet has been around for many decades, and even the World Wide Web has existed since its invention in the 1980s by Tim Berners Lee, but the art of the website still seems fairly new. There was a time not too long ago when websites were purely utilitarian and text-based, but now a good website design firm can incorporate all kinds of visual and interactive features that would have seemed cartoonishly space aged only twenty years ago!

    It’s hard to imagine what a website design firm even did twenty years ago. Websites from that era look pretty, well, amateur by today’s standards! We’re talking solid colored backgrounds, basic fonts with no stylization, and more clip art than anyone should have to see. The art of web design was clearly in its infancy at that time, as designers were only beginning to discover what was possible in terms of web design and functionality.

    The website design firm of today has much more to worry about than whether the Courier text on the plain black background should be cyan or magenta. In the 1990s, merely slaping a low-quality video onto a website made it seem like a futuristic marvel! It isn’t quite that easy anymore. The age of Web 2.0 has introduced many complexities to the world of web design. Websites are no longer sufficient on their own. It is expected that there will be a smooth integration with video and social media sites, and room for audience interaction. Even design features themselves have gotten much more complex. All of the elements of design – background, fonts, images – are expected to be heavily stylized, and clean and polished looking.

    The modern website design firm also must be more marketing savvy than its earlier counterparts. Yes, websites have long been used for marketing purposes, but the amount of clutter to cut through has grown exponentially. Between pop-up and sidebar ads, commercials preceding online videos, and social media and email marketing campaigns, it is much more difficult to make your product noticeable on the web. Web designers now must work much more closely with marketing teams to come up with slick tactics and memorable online campaigns. It’s what’s expected of them now. Another major difference in website marketing is how the information is handled. It used to that websites provided a one-way push of information to the audience, much like traditionally print-based marketing. Today, a certain amount of interactivity is expected. If the audience can’t have their say or engage in a dialogue with the company, they simply won’t be interested.

    As far as website development has come over the past twenty years, it’s still a fairly new industry, meaning it still has a long way to go. It might be difficult to imagine a website any more advanced than the ones of today, but there is always room to grow. Who knows what the website design firm of tomorrow has in store for us! It might be impossible to imagine now, but in twenty years, even the most advanced and sleek websites of today will be lumped into the same category as the gaudy, unfinished-looking sites of the 1990s.
